The Vice President of Obafemi Awolowo University , Ile -Ife Students ’ Union , Tosin Jacob , says she resorted to using a broken bottle to defend herself during a clash over N3 .8 m because she feared she might be sexually attacked . The clash occurred during a meeting on the utilisation of N3 .8 m recently disbursed to the union by the school management . Jacob , popularly called Emerald on campus , explained that she was scared of being mobbed or gang -raped , alleging that she had earlier been threatened sexually and physically . According to her , she had initially attempted to escape from the meeting in which the clash occurred but that the exits were blocked against her. It would be recalled that Jacob and the Social Director of the union , Adedayo Emmanuel , had engaged in a bloody clash on Tuesday evening . The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists in collaboration with Black Diamond Support Foundation on Saturday in Jos staged rallies to create awareness on the rising cases of rape and child molestation in the society. During the rallies which took place at markets within the Jos metropolis, members of the association encouraged members of the public to speak out against rape . Speaking at the event , the Chairperson of NAWOJ , Plateau Chapter , Mrs Jennifer Yarima , tasked members of the public to speak out and “break the culture of silence ” on rape and other forms of violence against women and children. Yarima described as painful and disheartening the way children were abused by people who were supposed to be their caregivers and protectors , such as their teachers , guardians , uncles and even parents . Five people were killed in the British Virgin Islands as a result of Hurricane Irma and another died in Anguilla , officials said Saturday as the Caribbean territories braced for another mega storm . “There have been five confirmed fatalities ,” said a statement from the government of the BVI , while a police office in Anguilla told AFP by telephone that a man had been crushed by his house .

As schools prepare to resume for the 2017 / 2018 academic session on Monday , Nigerian parents have expressed concerns about the high cost of school items . Some parents who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos on Saturday said school items had become costlier than the school fees . A civil servant , Mr Wale Olufela , told NAN that school fees remained the same from the previous session, but prices of textbooks , writing materials , school bags and shoes had gone up . “We learnt that Nigeria is out of recession , but it is yet to reflect on the cost of living because things are still expensive . “I am tempted to believe that the traders are taking undue advantage of the economic situation to exploit consumers ,’’ he said .
