A wildfire driven by California’s dry, seasonal Santa Ana winds rapidly expanded to more than 12,500 hectares overnight outside Los Angeles, forcing widening evacuations on Tuesday.  Authorities in Ventura County, on the Pacific Coast just north of Los Angeles, declared an emergency and said they planned to use fixed wing aircraft and helicopters against the “fast moving, active brush fire.’’  The fire started north of Santa Paula and burned into the Ventura city limits, pushed by strong east winds. The Ventura County Fire Department said that thousands of homes were being evacuated overnight in East Ventura. “The fire is still out of control and structures continue to be threatened throughout the fire area,” county emergency officials said in statement.  “Due to the intensity of the fire, crews are having trouble making access and there are multiple reports of structures on fire.”  The blaze was being driven by what the National Weather Service called ...

Police IG idris bows to #End Sars campaign

The  Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris has bowed to the demands by Nigerians to have a rethinking on the operations of the  SARS, the Special Anti-Robbery squad. In a rare campaign on Twitter on Sunday, Nigerians launched the hashtag #EndSARS, in which they asked that the police unit be scrapped. Posts after posts gave hair-raising details of the atrocities committed by policemen on the SARS teams nationwide. Though the campaigners wanted the unit, which fights bandits, disbanded, the police boss  said he has ordered an immediate reform, arguing that the unit has done well, on its core mandate, despite excesses. “Undoubtedly, the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) have been doing very well in fighting violent crimes such as Armed Robbery, Kidnappings and Cattle Rustling in the country in the recent time and this has resulted in drastic reduction of incidents of the mentioned violent crimes nationwide”. Thus rather than scrapping the unit, Idris in a st...

Read the TMZ report below⬇ Meek Mill   just lost some momentum in his bid for freedom, because the judge has denied his request for bail. According to docs, obtained by TMZ, Judge Genece Brinkley says Meek is a “flight risk” and “a danger to the community.” In denying him bail, she also questioned the validity of his clean drug tests … suggesting he might have used something called “Fast Flush” to cleanse his system. Meek’s lawyer went to court and asked for bail pending an appeal on his 2 to 4 year prison sentence for a probation violation.  The violation is tied to Meek’s 2008 conviction on drugs and weapons charges. There’s a big move to free Meek on grounds the judge was prejudiced … biased against Meek when he would not change managers or give Judge Brinkley a shout-out in a Boyz II Men song. Meek’s lawyer, Joe Tacopina, says Brinkley’s decision “continues her long pattern of unfair treatment” of Meek … and vows they will appeal.  Email:kmedi...

*Peter obi* THE former Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi has described the news coming out of Libya about the enslavement of Nigerians in that country, as not only sad but also troubling.  Speaking to the press at the weekend in Oriental Hotel   shortly after addressing the conference, “Networking with the Giants,” organised by African Youths Entrepreneurs, Obi called for concerted efforts among Nigerian leaders on the Libyan issue, saying that such tragedy required Nigerians to have a re-think about the trajectory the country was headed to.  In Obi’s words: “If you listened to my speech, you would see deliberate comparison of Nigeria with other countries   of relative development trajectory in the 80’s and how those countries had all overtaken us, because of leadership failures of the past. What we are witnessing  in Libya is part of the consequences of that failure. Such occurrences should be utilized by us to advise ourselves ...
