LASU ASUU chapter trade words on sacked lecturers

Authorities of the Lagos State University have issued a directive banning dismissed workers from entering the premises .
A statement by the Acting Public Relations Officer of LASU , Mr . Ademola Adekoya , announcing the ban also warned colleagues of the dismissed workers of being at risk if they show sympathy .
It would be recalled that the institution ’s Chairman of Academic Staff Union of Universities , LASU chapter , Dr. Isaac Oyewunmi, and 14 other academic staff were dismissed , while two others were demoted recently over offences bordering on fraud.
It was gathered that their sacking had generated debates among workers and students of the university.
While some faulted the processes employed in their dismissal , others said banning them from entering the university campus would portray them as criminals.
Some staff of the university insisted that the ASUU chairman was dismissed because of his hard stance against the management in the appointment of some principal officers of the university.
According to the university management , Oyewunmi, a senior lecturer in the Department of Human Kinetics , Sports and Health Education , Faculty of Education , was specifically dismissed over allegations of demanding N50 ,000 from 2003 modular year students of Political Science Education on the sandwich programme to process their results .
The General Secretary of ASUU ’s branch in LASU , Anthony Dansu , described Oyewunmi’s dismissal as “an attempt to weaken the university’s ASUU chapter . ”
He argued that LASU is a public place for anyone to visit , and that the dismissed workers could only be asked not to engage in any official activities .
He warned the LASU management to desist from causing crisis in the university, adding that ASUU would adopt legal actions to get the sacked chairman reinstated .
He said , “It is a pure case of injustice . It is just because the union is demanding due process to be followed in the administration of the university.
“They want to crash the union and when you want to crash the union , you target the head . But we know that no matter how lies fly , justice and truth will catch up with it one day .
“We are still processing the matter at levels of ASUU ; by the time we are out with the steps that we are taking , the whole world will know .
“Military men and other security personnel were used to harass the chairman last Friday inside the ASUU secretariat and also on Monday when he came to use the bank .
“We appeal to higher authority and stakeholders in LASU that the crisis that is not in ground now should not be generated by the university.”
But the acting PRO of LASU , Adekoya , explained that the dismissed workers were asked not to step their foot on the university campus to prevent “violence and breakdown of law and order on the peace of the campus .”
Adekoya said any dismissed staff who wishes to visit the university must first get in touch with the university’s Chief Security Officer through his phone number or email address .
He said , “The university authority hereby reiterates that all individuals who have been dismissed should stay away from the premises of the Lagos State University henceforth .
“For the avoidance of doubt , concerned individuals and the general public are reminded that the Governing Council is the highest policy / decision making body of the university.
“In the circumstance, all members of the university community who have chosen to sentimentally support the dismissed individuals , to undermine the decision of the Council , are also acting contrary to the rules and regulations of the university and are advised to refrain from doing so .
“It is imperative to state categorically that the misconduct for which they were dismissed were not union -related , and the disciplinary mechanism of the university, as backed by the conditions of service , was duly followed in the process that led to their dismissal .”
