So sad: country music singer Don williams dies at age 78



Williams, known as country music’s gentle giant, died on Friday after a short illness, a statement on his website said.
He earned the nickname due to his build and surprisingly smooth and easy singing style.
Born in 1939, Williams went into music early and but it wasn’t until the 70s that his career took off and from 1974 till 1991 each of his singles hit the Billboard Country charts’ Top-40.
He has 17 number one country hits to his name including beauties such as “It Must Be Love”, “Tulsa Time”, “Amanda”, “Good Old Boys Like Me”, “I believe In Love”, and “Rake And Ramblin’ Man”, among others.
With more than 20 albums to his name and over 50 singles, Williams was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2010.
He announced his retirement in 2006 and went on a hugely successful farewell tour that year. He, however, came out of retirement in 2010, quitting finally last year. His final release was in March 2016 – a live CD and DVD recorded in Ireland.
This year, a tribute album was released in his name ‘Gentle Giants: The Songs of Don Williams’ and it included performances of his hits by several artists including Lady Antelbellum and Garth Brooks.
