…The Bursary will be paid this month – SA, Education National Union of Lagos State Students (NULASS) and National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Lagos axis, have called on Lagos State Governor, His Excellency Akinwunmi Ambode to pay the State Bursary and scholarship dues for Lagosian schooling all over the federation.
As failure to pay the dues within seven days, according to them will result to a peaceful protest to the state governor’s office in Alausa, Ikeja.
In a statement signed Daniju Sultan, NASS president and Moses Adewale, NANS Joint Committee Chairman, respectively, the bodies said that the inability of the state government to pay the above dues have caused untold hardships for the students in not paying their fess and buying of study materials.
Their statement reads, “Your Excellency, we are compelled to notify you of our resolution to hit the streets of Lagos and cause peaceful civil disobedience in protest of non-payment of our bursary and scholarship dues for all Lagos state indigenes schooling across the federation in various higher institutions.
“Our resolve to protest after the 7days ultimatum is not unconnected to the silence of the state government not communicating to the beneficiaries when the bursary will be paid. In the past months, we have exhibited the highest level of civility as expected from a body comprised of not only higher institution students but a parliament of intellect by writing, through calls, text messages and mails to the chairman of the Lagos state scholarship board, and Special Adviser to the state on education, Mr Obafela Bank-Olemoh. “While we communicate our disdain to this uncaring commitment of the state to educational purposes and support towards of its own future leaders who sincerely need this fund to not only survive on campus but sometimes rely on it as the only source of paying school fees and purchasing textbooks on campus.”
“We wish to say that should the state fail to release funds for our payment, we shall begin a protest across the state from the office of the governor after seven days of delivering our letter to the governor.” Stated NASS/NANS.
Meanwhile, Mr Bank-Olemoh in a chat with Vanguard said that the state government was making all efforts to pay bursary and scholarships this December.
His words,” Please, disregard the reports that we have been owing bursary and scholarship dues.
Meanwhile, this year’s 2017 dues will be paid this month, December. The governor has signed the payment and we are processing all the requirements.
